Murals for Baby’s Room
The quickest and easiest way to develop your nursery’s style is to paint a mural. Murals add instant charm and character to any room. Do not fear if you are not an artist. There are professionals out there who will help you create the perfect look to welcome your little one home! With a few basic ideas, your muralist will come up with fabulous ideas that play up your theme, personality, décor and budget.
First, select the baby bedding. Your baby’s bedding will be the jumping off point for the rest of the room. It comes complete with a color palette and theme. Your bedding will fall into one of two categories — patterned or print. Select patterned bedding, one composed of stripes, small florals or dots, if you want a unique mural such as a beach theme. Patterned bedding will not match the mural, but coordinate with it, providing the color palette for the room. Select a printed bedding full of characters if you want your mural to exactly match your bedding. Printed bedding will provide both the color palette and theme for the room.
When the muralist visits your home for the consultation, together you will brainstorm ideas and decide on what images will go where. Most muralists will give you general pricing over the phone, but the final quote will be determined at your consultation. Each muralist prices differently, some by the square foot and some by the day. In the end, it is the quality and style of the mural that is most important.
Most murals take between two and five days to complete. Your mural can easily last for many years to come, so consider the longevity of the theme you choose. For example, a “Rock A Bye Baby” theme may only be appropriate for the first few years, whereas a jungle theme could easily transition into the toddler years then school age.
If this is not your first baby, keep in mind your older child as well. It is very common for a muralist to paint both a nursery and the big brother or sister’s room at the same time. This is a great way to make your older child feel special during this transitional time. Many children are surrendering their crib or toddler bed to their new sibling, so a room makeover complete with personalized mural might just be the ticket.
Murals come in two basic styles: full wall murals (completely covering the wall top to bottom, left to right), and vignette murals, where the walls are dotted with primary large images, and smaller supporting images are scattered throughout. Most nursery murals are comprised of a large graphic, the baby’s name over the crib, and a few of the cast of characters from the bedding over the rocker and changing table.
When choosing a mural, there is not as much need for decorations, pictures, etc. The mural is the artwork! A good muralist will incorporate lots of personal touches, making the mural truly custom to your room and baby.
Don’t forget that you will probably have multiple baby showers and be given lots of knick-knacks throughout your pregnancy and after baby arrives. So don’t feel the need to decorate every square inch yourself. Leave room for all of the gifts!
