Green Must-Haves for Baby

When I brought my seven-and-a-half pound newborn baby home, I knew quite a bit about natural pregnancy and childbirth. I still had more to learn, however, about creating a secure, natural environment for my sweet little bundle.

With experience now under my belt, I want to share five wholesome ways to nurture your baby with nature’s best:

Cloth Diapers
Take heart in knowing that all cloth diapering mamas started where you are now – overwhelmed by the sheer variety of cloth diapers and information on how to use them. Don’t fret; if you mix-and-match a few different diapers to start your stash, you are sure to find ways to use them all – and discover the one kind you can’t live without!

Once you’ve put a few cloth diapers on and let them do their work, you’ll ride that learning curve and soon know if you prefer snap or Velcro closures and whether all-in-ones, pockets, or pre-folds with covers work best for you. If you feel daunted by the task of getting to know cloth, think about all of the money you’ll save – not to mention landfill space!

Organic Swaddle Blanket
If you want to clock more sleep as soon as possible (and you will), learn the art of the escape-proof swaddle. The best and safest way to swaddle your newborn is with a blanket specially made for this purpose. Consider spending a few extra dollars on an organic swaddler, such as the Woombie or Aden & Anais product lines. That way you’re supporting eco-friendly cotton growers and giving baby the best nature has to offer.

Natural Toiletries
You may receive department-store brand baby wash in your baby shower gift basket, but eco-conscious moms know that soaps with natural, organic ingredients are better for baby’s sensitive skin.

I don’t mind spending a little more on natural soaps and moisturizers because I know I can trust that these products are specially formulated with my baby’s comfort and health in mind.

Baby Carrier
Have you heard of the “fourth” trimester, the sensitive first three months of your baby’s life spent adjusting to unfamiliar and somewhat harsh new surroundings? The most natural and compassionate thing you can do during this time is wear your baby as often as possible. Babywearing is also the best way to get your newborn to fall asleep! Whether you prefer wraps, slings, or harness-style carriers, you have a colorful array of babywearing choices, including several organic fabric options!

Breastfeeding Supplies
Breastfeeding your newborn is the premiere way to nurture and nourish your little one – and nursing has the added bonus of helping to protect against disease, too! While you and your baby already come equipped with the basic necessities, two more items help ensure a smooth nursing experience: cloth nursing pads to keep you dry and the support of a good nursing pillow.
