Cloth Diaper Basics
You may be thinking about using cloth diapers but are not sure where to start. Unlike in our mothers’ and grandmothers’ days, there are now many types of cloth diapers to choose from. The myriad of choices can be somewhat confusing. The following information will provide the basics of modern cloth diapers.
Pre-folds or Flats and Covers
- These are the cloth diapers most people think of when thinking about cloth diapers.
- They are the least expensive of all the cloth diaper options.
- Pre-folds can be folded to fit any size baby.
- They can be pinned, you can use a Snappi or they can simply be folded into the cover.
Fitted Cloth Diapers and Covers
- A fitted diaper is an easier version of the pre-folds because you do not have to fold anything.
- This type needs to have a cover over it in order to keep the baby dry.
- You have to buy a size up as your baby grows.
- There is no need for pinning or using a Snappi.
Pocket Diapers
These are cloth diapers that can be stuffed with any amount of absorbency (varies by baby). The outside is usually a PUL (polyurethane laminate) material. The inside is typically a very soft fleece or ultra suede material. There is a pocket between the outside material and the lining that can be stuffed with the insert of your choice but most are made out of micro fiber terry cloth. They come with snap or Velcro type closures.
All in One (AIO) or All in Two (AI2)
- The simplest of all the cloth diapers.
- No folding, pinning or stuffing required.
- The leak protection and absorbency are all in one.
- Simply wash and go with type of cloth diaper.
One Size Diapers
- Most types of cloth diapers offer this option, the most common being the pocket type.
- These diapers will have an adjustable rise that allows you to make the larger or smaller.
- They are very cost efficient, as you will use the same diapers from birth to potty training.
- Great for families that have two or more children in diapers as the same diapers can be worn by all sizes.
Now that you understand the basics of cloth diapers you can get to the best part –shopping! There are lots of cute styles and patterns for both girls and boys.
