Your Maternity Photo Shoot
Tips on What to Bring and Wear
Black, black and more black. This is a joyous time but wearing black or other dark shades does amazing things to showcase your adorable bump while concealing some of those other places you would rather hide.
The combination of a form-fitting top plus a flowing cascade cardigan sweater or an elegant scarf emphasizes your belly while looking lovely and comfortable. Try to stay away from all white clothing unless you have darker skin tones.
Leggings are a must. They show off your still great looking features and are a natural pairing with a flowing cascade cardigan mentioned above. Plus they are comfortable. If you are planning to bare more up top during your session, they are handy to have on so you are not totally au-natural.
Avoid wearing tight fitting waistbands, bras, socks, or undies in the hours leading up to your session. Those seams leave unsightly red lines and creases.
Jewelry. Glam it up! Long strands of pearls are so gorgeous and look great with your expanding cleavage. Bring a couple of earring choices in case your photographer wants the option of either the sweet conservative look with post earrings or a more grand look with chandelier danglies.
It is definitely worth scheduling makeup and hair appointments for your shoot. The pampering will do you good! And don’t forget fingers and toes! Chances are you will be barefoot in these photos not to mention your hands are key in emphasizing your baby bump. You don’t want unkempt nails to stand out in otherwise gorgeous photos.
If you have long hair, bring ponytail holders or chopsticks to do a few photos with your hair swept up in an elegant bun. Also don’t forget bobby pins if you have some hair that won’t quite make it into the bun. There is a reason ballet dancers wear their hair this way. It gives a long delicate look to your neck and shoulders. If you have short hair you have this department covered anyway.
Try to stay away from salty foods the day before your session. Chances are you will have some swelling in places like hands and ankles anyway and there is no need to aggravate it with that trip to the Chinese food buffet.
Having Dad or other siblings in the photos are so sweet. Make sure their outfits fit into the similar dark shades that you are wearing without distracting patterns.
Finally, a word about doing some nude or near nude shots: If done right, these can be very tasteful and artful way to remember your body and the wonderment of how it grows a child. Make sure you are comfortable with your photographer and any requests they might have in this department. But also don’t be afraid to let your inner goddess shine a bit.
