3D/4D Ultrasound
A Memorable Experience!

Imagine seeing your baby yawn, smile, blink, or play with its nose months before you meet him or her!  This is all possible with the latest in 3D/4D ultrasound technology.

What is 3D/4D Ultrasound?

3D/4D ultrasound is produced from the same images as conventional 2D ultrasound.  An ultrasound transducer sends sound waves into the body.  These waves bounce back to the transducer and produce an image on the computer screen.  Conventional 2D ultrasound images are produced from only one slice (or angle), thus producing a flat, black and white image of the baby.  3D ultrasound images are generated from many different slices (or angles).  The returning sound waves are processed by a highly sophisticated computer program resulting in an astonishing three dimensional image of your precious baby!  4D ultrasound, also known as 3D live, adds the element of real time.  Now, the life-like image moves.  You are able to see a real-time "video" of your baby in the womb!

Safety

With all of the emerging technology there are always the important questions of exposure and safety.  Ultrasound has been utilized for over 30+ years and no harmful biological effects have been shown.  The power levels used for 3D/4D ultrasound are the same as with conventional 2D imaging, and the FDA sets the standard level that is safe to be used.  The equipment used to obtain these images is found in hospitals and doctors' offices throughout the country.  Physicians use this technology to reveal more details about fetal health.

The Benefits of 3D/4D Ultrasound

Some healthcare providers argue that if a 3D/4D ultrasound is not medically indicated that it should not be done.  Even though a 3D/4D ultrasound session may not be medically indicated the benefits to the pregnancy are significant.   3D/4D ultrasound allows parents-to-be and family members the ability to recognize the ultrasound image of a fetus as their baby, therefore,  contributing to more positive health behaviors by the mother to be. Seeing a realistic view of the baby positively impacts parents and decreases anxiety levels, 3D/4D ultrasound offers parents-to-be a unique glimpse of their baby and enhances the already developing bond.

Choosing a 3D/4D Prenatal Imaging Center

As this technology becomes more widespread, there has been an emergence of prenatal imaging centers that want to bring this unparalleled technology to expectant parents.  When parents choose to have a 3D/4D reassurance ultrasound at an independent imaging center there are a few key points to look for:

First, a reputable 3D/4D imaging center will require that you show proof of prenatal care or obtain written verification of prenatal care from your provider.  A 3D/4D ultrasound is an elective limited diagnostic ultrasound and does NOT replace your doctor's exam.  A responsible center will only discuss fetal number, gender (if you wish to know), position, and allow you to listen to the fetal heartbeat.

Second, it is very important that your exam be performed by an experienced ARDMS registered sonographer, who is certified in OB/GYN.   You want a sonographer who has the experience and knowledge to operate the ultrasound machine safely.

Third, responsible and reputable imaging centers will have a medical director on staff.  He or she provides policies and procedures for how the center should be safely operated.  The medical director sets guidelines associated with the ultrasound equipment and scanning requirements.   In the case of a medical issue or concern the medical director can be contacted.

Fourth, scanning time should be kept to a minimum.   The amount of time needed to obtain 3D/4D images is much less than that required when performing a diagnostic fetal anatomy exam.  A facility may quote that the session will last 20, 30, even 40 minutes, but a lot of this time is spent choosing and printing images for you to take home.

Fifth, there are several factors which are important to a successful 3D/4D ultrasound. The ability to achieve clear images and activity will depend on the stage of pregnancy and position of the fetus during the exam.  The most optimal time to obtain 3D/4D images is between the 26th-32nd weeks of pregnancy.  The baby's features are more distinguishable because of the increase in fat layers of the baby's face.  Also, during this time there is still space remaining in the womb.  As the pregnancy progresses the space remaining decreases.

When scanning in 3D everything becomes solid, so if the umbilical cord or placenta is in the way, they can act as a barrier to visualizing the baby's face.  This differs from 2D imaging because a sonographer can angle differently to "see through" such barriers.

Another important factor is the amount of amniotic fluid.  It is important to stay well hydrated during pregnancy.  Being well hydrated and taking in extra fluid a few days before your 3D/4D appointment can help with image clarity.

Please keep in mind that each woman is different and not all pregnancies are the same.  Images seen in the media are some of the best images obtained. Everyone wants to show off their best work!

The most gratifying 3D/4D ultrasound session should offer an inviting comfortable viewing facility, the finest equipment and a professional staff whose primary focus is on you, your baby and ensuring the best and safest experience possible.  A 3D/4D ultrasound is an unforgettable experience that will leave you with memories and keepsakes for years to come!  Don't miss out!
