How to Select a Postpartum Doula
A 5 Step Guide

You are nearing the end of your pregnancy and excited about the newest addition to your family. The term Postpartum Doula is familiar, yet you have no idea on how to select the right one for your family. The following is a "how to" guide on the selection process made simple for you.

Step 1

Begin by determining the needs of your family as you prepare for the birth of your child.

  • How long is your maternity leave?
  • What kind of support do you anticipate needing? When do you anticipate needing this support?
  • What are the ages of the other children if any, in the home.
  • Identify any medical conditions, food preferences or allergies which the doula should be aware of.
  • Outline cultural traditions that are a part of your family.
  • Determine your budget for a Postpartum Doula.

Step 2

Next, prepare a list of questions that you wish to ask potential doulas.

  • Are you certified? Is so, by which organization?
  • Please summarize your experience as a Postpartum Doula?
  • Do you have an specialized experience? (ex: multiples, infants with disabilities, preterm infants)
  • What is your availability?
  • Can you provide references for my review?

These are just samples of questions you may include in your list. Conform your questions to your needs and interest.

Step 3

The next step is to begin looking for a Postpartum Doula. There are several ways in which to find a Postpartum Doula for your family.

  • Ask family and friends for a referral.
  • Contact your local doula cooperative.
  • Contact a doula placement agency.
  • Some local or state agencies may have a new mother's program with doula placement or referrals. Don't be afraid to reach out to them!
  • Contact your local hospital or birthing center.
  • Ask your OB/GYN or Midwife.

Tap into every resource you can identify to find the Postpartum Doula that you are looking for.

Step 4

Now that you have a list of Postpartum Doulas to select from, begin by setting up consultations. Many doulas provide their consultations free of charge. Take your time! The key is to finding the right fit for your family. Be sure to have your list of questions in hand. Don't be alarmed if the doula has a list of questions for you as well. As you are seeking someone to compliment your family, she is looking for a family to compliment as well.

Step 5

You have selected a Postpartum Doula! Congratulations! Be sure to request a contract outlining the services which will be provided, the fee agreed upon and the date which services will begin. Ensure that you both sign the contract and that you retain a copy for your records.
