Pregnancy Skin
Health Benefits of Facials
During our first exciting days after finding out we are expecting a baby in 9 months we also find out it will come with many changes. One of the most dreaded ones is our skin. The facial area, which people see every day, can be a frustrating area for some women and cause emotional distress about the physical appearance of their skin. Not one of us, over the other, is fully protected from developing unwanted skin conditions such as hormonal breakouts, melasma (pregnancy mask), severe dry or oily skin, and redness.
For many years facials were thought of as a pure luxury. In fact, these days facial are a necessity for healthy skin, especially at a major time of change with the body. It is important to exfoliate and properly hydrate the skin without causing any clogging or irritation.
Something as easy as a regular facial once a month can provide numerous health benefits including improved texture and tone, increased cell turnover, stimulation of red blood cells, and an increase in the production of collagen (which makes the skin stronger and less prone to wrinkles). Getting customized facial and body treatments regularly as well as a good home care regimen will greatly reduce your risk for hormonal breakouts and help minimize future stretch marks.
As expectant mothers, we are told how important it is to eat a balanced diet. By taking the full water intake recommended and daily requirements of fruits, vegetables, and oils you will maintain the nutrition needed for the basic building blocks of beautiful skin. When considering your home care skin regimen, try to stay away from harsh chemicals to avoid irritation. It is not recommended to use any of the Tretinoins or Alpha hydroxyl acids during pregnancy. Instead try using products that are more on the natural side such as Vitamin C or products with natural healing properties. Another big tip is sunscreen, which is so important to reduce any chance of developing hyper pigmentation during this vulnerable time throughout pregnancy as Melasma can kick in high gear very quickly. Sun damage is the single most important cause to premature aging.
Of course, we have got the stretch mark issue. Stretch marks are caused by tearing of the dermis, and over time can diminish but not disappear completely. They are the result of the rapid stretching of the skin associated with pregnancy. Many studies have been done in preventative ways to reduce the signs of stretch marks. The best result came from Vitamin E. Coca butter, which has been shown to be an effective moisturizer, however has not proven to prevent or reduce stretch marks. After pregnancy, there are ways to treat the existing stretch marks by laser therapy and prescription retinoids.
Most importantly, listen to your mind and body. By creating an inner self-sanctuary, you can keep your stress level to a minimum and your mind at ease through this amazing time. Remember to take ‘mom time' and visit a relaxing day spa for a beauty benefit wellness check!
