Fortunately, through many hospitals today, there are tools to empower women to gain confidence. Attending classes designed for new and expectant parents is one of the best ways to diminish your anxiety.

Clearly, there are many resources available to gather information on your own; however, formal and informal classes provided by hospital programs offer so much more. Participating in a class broadens an understanding of the knowledge needed to be comfortable during your experiences. Here, suitable information is shared, support from other attendees of the group is available and an instructor, who is a remarkable resource, are all on hand.

Learning is a process to be embraced, not just a single event. When couples start thinking about conception or are in the early stages of pregnancy, the learning process begins. An Early Pregnancy class or an Orientation to Pregnancy class will offer information on fetal growth and development, physical and emotional changes during pregnancy, nutrition, relaxation and exercise techniques, expectations of the hospital stay and more. Attending a class at this stage prompts a positive attitude right from the beginning.

Women in the second trimester of pregnancy may become overwhelmed with knowledge in preparation for motherhood. Second trimester is a good time to focus on baby care, and breastfeeding. Baby care classes allow expectant parents to have hands on learning to enhance their knowledge. Essential learning, such as feeding, bathing, cord care, sleep patterns, proper car seat use, and home safety are shared. Breastfeeding classes will focus on all aspects of breastfeeding from delivery through the postpartum period. True learning takes place and confidence is built when the parents are shown baby care necessities by a trusted caregiver. Furthermore, a solid understanding of this information before delivery will facilitate a smother transition to motherhood.

During the third trimester, women often become focused with the eminent delivery. This is an ideal time when learning can shift to childbirth preparation. Childbirth Preparation classes offer comprehensive information needed in order for couples to be ready for labor and delivery. Topics during this class will integrate pre-labor changes, stages of labor, breathing and relaxation techniques, pain management, and information about vaginal and cesarean section delivery. A tour of the birthing area and a discussion about hospital expectations are also often included. Again, this is wonderful opportunity not just to gather accurate and current information, but a time to discuss questions and concerns with an experienced professional. Classes, also, provide and opportunity to meet other expectant parents. The participants form a social and support network to share concerns, issues, and resources. Ultimately, this dynamic of the group can provide a haven for the sharing of knowledge, decreasing of fear and tension, and building of confidence towards childbirth.

As new parents, the learning process continues as parents transition into motherhood. New Mother Groups can address the needs of the newborn, as well as, the physical and emotional adjustments of parenthood. It provides a caring environment with a facilitator to share knowledge, experiences and support. Topics discussed often include recovering from birth, learning to progress into parenthood, developmental stages of babies, and development of self-esteem for mom and baby. New motherhood is a wonderful and exciting time, but it is a transitional period. Like all life transitions, it will be smoother if it is shared with other new moms who are also in this stage of life.

Through the period of pregnancy and postpartum, pre and post natal Yoga Classes can also provide a valuable opportunity to prepare your mind, body and spirit. Gentle, safe yoga postures tone and strengthen muscles, and help gain or maintain flexability.Breathing and relaxation techniques are learned to aid concentration and relieve tension. In addition, Yoga class, also, provides a place were new or expectant mothers can meet and further share their experiences in a supportive environment.

Attending classes is a prominent tool to empower new and expectant parents to feel confident through pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum phase. The knowledge and support attained during classes can have beneficial effects that even reach beyond the postpartum period.
