Choosing a Nanny
In-Home Child Care Options

What to look for in a Nanny:

Experience — Examine and explore work history (including childcare), life experiences, and education.

Compatibility — Do you concur on child rearing and discipline philosophies and approaches? Are your habits similar (i.e. neatness, timeliness, flexibility, priorities)?

Qualities — Does the applicant have a natural inclination to connect with and understand the needs of children at each stage of development? Consider common sense & patience — a nanny needs an extraordinary amount of both.

What to look for in an Agency:

Experience & Reputation — How long has the agency been operating? What have you heard about the agency? Word-of-mouth reputation is important.

Availability — If you need to reach someone immediately, can you?

Screening — Know specifically the depth of childcare reference checks and applicant interviews.

What to look for if you are hiring a Nanny on your own:

1. Ask details about background and work history since high school.

2. Check ALL childcare jobs and verify ALL employment.

3. Contract to do a state criminal check, DMV check, and social security number verification.
