Postpartum Doulas
Help for Mother & Baby after Baby Is Born
Doula
(DOO-la) comes from the Greek meaning "in service of". A postpartum
doula is a specially trained woman who provides in-home, non-medical,
postpartum care and emotional support. A doula can also provide assistance
and guidance for breastfeeding.
Based on the European concept of mothering the mother, a doula allows Mom to rest and feel nurtured so that she can focus her energies on healing herself and caring for her baby. Though an exciting time, coming home with a new baby can also be overwhelming and exhausting. Most expectant mothers and fathers have given little thought about their own needs after the baby. A doula service fills those needs and is invaluable in assisting postpartum adjustment for all families. The doula is a role model, teacher, friend, and above all, provider of unconditional support. Families utilizing doulas experience less postpartum depression, greater breastfeeding success, and a smoother transition to parenting.
