Early Child Care Providers
Things to Consider when Choosing a Provider

As you might imagine, there are a number of things to consider when choosing an early child care provider. In looking for care for your child, you will need to decide if you prefer to have your child in a home setting or in a larger facility. Do you want convenient hours and availability? A developed curriculum to prepare your child for school? Subsidized funding accepted? Meals and/or snacks provided for your child?
The first step in finding appropriate child care is to schedule tours at different facilities. While there, ask detailed questions of the director and the teachers. You will need to assess the environment, the quality of care being provided, and the convenience of each center.

Environment

Security
When you arrive at the facility, take note of the security measures they have in place to keep the children safely inside while controlling who has access to the building. Do they have a security system where parents have to punch in a code to attain entry to the center? Is there a doorbell system so that someone will greet you at the door, or can anyone just walk in to the center? The more secure the center, the better your peace of mind.

Licensure
At the very least, you want to make sure the care provider is licensed by the Department of Public Welfare. The DPW will inspect the facility at least once a year to confirm that required safety measures are being met.

Equipment
While you are doing your walk through the center, look to make sure that there is a variety of toys and that they are clean and in good condition. You want to see that the children are actively engaged in a variety of activities. Look on the walls and see if the children’s art work is being displayed.

Quality

A number of early child care providers have worked hard to attain professional accreditation under one or more accrediting programs. Each of the different accrediting programs (NAEYC and Keystone STARS) ensures quality curricula and regular inspections of the facility and the staff providing care.

Convenience

It is important that the facility you choose is not only safe, secure, and clean, but it should be easily accessible. It is important that the facility is convenient for you, so that you will not have to go too far out of your way. Make sure the provider is available during the hours and days that you need care. If you choose a facility that is not convenient or has a schedule that does not match your needs, you will end up regretting your decision and looking for another child care facility. Your child will strive for consistency and it is very important for your child’s stability that you are happy with your choice of providers.

In making your decision, take your time, weigh all of the options, and choose a provider that you will be comfortable with in the long term. You want a place that will not only meet your needs, but give you peace of mind as well.
