Whether baby has arrived already or is still on the way, there’s never a better time to get organized for the adventures you’ll take outside your home! Here are some tips and trade secrets straight from a new mom, myself:
First, the baby!
Dress her for the weather and the outing. This means if you plan to wear a hat, so should she. Newborns typically need more layers than older children or adults. So layering is key. Put her in comfortable clothes since she’ll likely be snuggled up for the outing. Start with a onesie, then add a long sleeve top or sweatshirt depending on the weather. If the weather is cold, a hat is a must. Choose one with a chin strap so the hat stays snug. If the weather is warm and sunny, don’t forget a sunhat and SPF 15+ PABA free suntan lotion (for babies older than 6 months). You may also invest in a bug repellent mesh cover for the stroller for those hot summer days. A light blanket is a great idea for all seasons, so have one ready to go.
Feed Me (and YOU!)
For the baby, it all depends on how long you intend to be away from home. If you are planning to breastfeed, the food comes easily packaged with you! For privacy during public breastfeeding, there are some fabulous, inexpensive nursing cover-ups available for baby meals on the run. If you plan to feed the baby a bottle, store the powdered formula in a container separate from the water in her bottle, so you can have a fresh bottle on hand when baby needs her lunch. Stop by a coffee shop or restaurant and ask for a hot cup of water to warm the bottle just before the feeding.
And don’t forget YOUR nourishment! Moms need all the healthy food and hydration we can get. Bring a bottle of water for you, along with a package of peanut butter crackers, raisins, pretzels or an apple. Caring for yourself is very important so you can heal from pregnancy and childbirth. It is something that’s easy to forget when you are so dedicated to taking care of your baby. You need to take care of your mind and body to be able to do the same for your new baby.
Blow-outs Happen
When nature calls…or with many babies, nature “blows out” of the diaper, an emergency diaper change is in need. Bring along 3-4 diapers, plenty of wipes (which are also great for quick face and hands cleanups). And don’t forget an extra outfit or two. All those clothes you will receive at your baby shower and after the baby arrives will certainly come in handy when the baby gives YOU a present on your outing!
From point A to point B
Whether you plan to stroll your baby around town or keep her close to you in a sling or baby carrier, make sure you have your transportation equipment ready at the door or in the car.
Stuff it all into…
Ah yes, your all-encompassing diaper bag. Diaper bags these days are not only chic-looking but also as practical as ever. Many bags look more like couture purses than they do diaper bags! With plenty of storage for baby essentials, it’s incredible that they even have room for your cell phone, Blackberry and car keys. Some even have a small mirror for quick cosmetic touch-ups on-the-go! Who says you have to forego fashion and good looks to be a mommy?!
Plan ahead
Take some time the night before to organize your diaper bag, place your apple in your tote and make a list of places you plan to go the next day. And always remember, plans change! Expect the occasion hiccup in your plans…so if it does happen, you can be prepared.
And last of all…
Bring your confidence and your smile! What ever stopped you from going out before the baby arrived? NOTHING! So, with a little planning ahead, nothing will stop you now, mama! Passers by will smile at you and your baby – guaranteed. And best of all, you’ll get some things accomplished and feel great doing it. So, get out there with your little bundle of joy and show the world that you are a hip mom – on the go with baby in tow!
