Pica Cravings During Pregnancy
When "Strange Cravings" are Too Strange...

Pica is a disorder marked by craving substances with little or no nutritional value (e.g., clay, dirt, mothballs). The word pica is Latin for magpie—a bird that is notorious for eating almost anything. While pregnancy is commonly linked to craving certain foods, pica is less common. Pica cravings are most typically seen in children, especially those with developmental delays. Pica cravings during pregnancy are rare; the reason is not definitively known.  However, according to the American Dietetic Association, there may be a connection to iron deficiency, the body’s attempt to obtain vitamins or minerals, and/or an underlying physical or mental illness (American Pregnancy Association, 2009). If you are suffering with symptoms of pica, recommendations are:

  1. Inform your doctor/midwife/pregnancy-professional immediately.  While you may feel shameful or confused, s/he can assist you in identifying any underlying physiological explanations and/or provide a referral to an appropriate healthcare professional.

  2. Request that blood work be completed to rule out any clear medical explanation.

  3. Seek supportive behavioral services (e.g., a therapist) to curb the underlying triggers that are leading up to these episodes.  You can start with asking your general practitioner/nurse or look on the back of your insurance card for a referral number.  Most people do not realize that behavioral health services are typically covered by your insurance.

  4. Know that there is help and that with the appropriate services, pica is treatable.
