3D/4D Ultrasounds
Answers to Common Questions

What is an elective prenatal ultrasound?

3D/4D prenatal ultrasounds provide a positive bonding experience with your unborn baby for the mother, father and family members.  Before receiving a 3D/4D prenatal ultrasound, a medical, diagnostic ultrasound should have already been performed to assess the gestational age of the fetus and to evaluate for fetal anomalies, as well as the basic components of fetal anatomy.

What are the differences between 2D, 3D & 4D?

A 3D/4D ultrasound is similar to a traditional 2D ultrasound scan in that it uses the same ultrasonic sound waves to produce an image of your baby.  With 2D ultrasound, the sound waves are rendered to produce a “sliced” view, which most people are familiar with.  You can generally see the outline of the baby’s head and hands, which is a miracle in itself, but you still can’t see your baby with great detail.  With 3D/4D technology, the sound waves are rendered by the software in such a way that you can see your unborn baby with remarkable clarity.  Even better, the 4D element reflects any movement in the womb… from a yawn to a stretch to a smile.

Can 3D/4D ultrasound technicians determine gender?

Yes, in most cases the gender of the baby can be determined.  Certain factors such as body tissue content, developmental stage and fetal position may affect the ability to determine the gender.

Is it safe?

3D/4D ultrasound uses the same, safe ultrasonic waves as a 2D scan.  Multiple studies have shown that when used properly, there is absolutely no reason to infer that 3D/4D ultrasound is any more or less intrusive than 2D imaging.  It simply processes the sound waves differently so that you can see your baby in an entirely new way.

When should I schedule my appointment?

The best time to schedule a 3D/4D ultrasound session is between 26-34 weeks.
However, excellent images of the baby can be obtained any time after about 22 weeks.  Some mothers obtain more than one 3D/4D ultrasound to enjoy the development and images during the 2nd and 3rd trimester.

How should I prepare for my 3D/4D ultrasound session?

The only preparation for a 3D/4D ultrasound session is to be well hydrated throughout your pregnancy.  Good hydration can provide better images of your baby.

What should I look for in a 3D/4D ultrasound provider?

You should look for a provider that adheres to FDA guidelines for ultrasound safety, requires prenatal care verification, medical oversight, and those offering a family friendly environment.
