Parenting & Childbirth Education Classes

The best way to a healthy, happy baby starts with practicing proper prenatal care. At Holy Redeemer, we offer an array of classes on pregnancy, childbirth preparation, and infant care. Classes are held on the campus of Holy Redeemer Hospital & Medical Center, 1648 Huntingdon Pike, Meadowbrook, PA.

Prepared Childbirth Classes are taught by nurses who are certified childbirth educators and are designed for couples between their seventh and eighth month of pregnancy. Topics include the physiological and psychological stages and labor and birth. This six-session course provides information on medication and anesthesia options, conscious relaxation, breathing techniques, the role of the mother's support person and the postpartum experience. A tour of the maternity department is included.

The Mini Refresher Class is designed for parents who have previously attended the Prepared Childbirth Classes. This program reviews the labor and birth process with an emphasis on relaxation, breathing and other coping techniques. An optional tour of the maternity department is included.

The Sibling-To-Be Class is a 90-minute program that helps 3- to 7-year-olds prepare for their role as "big" brothers or sisters. They learn about newborns; how to care for the baby; talk about feelings; visit the nursery; and have a celebration party.

Healthy Mother/Healthy Baby Classes provide information on nutrition, physical and emotional changes of pregnancy, comfort techniques, fetal development and an introduction to relaxation skills and deep breathing. These classes are recommended for couples during the first months of pregnancy but are helpful in all stages.

Infant Care is a two-hour session focusing on newborn needs and characteristics as well as infant care. The class includes demonstrations in bathing, diapering and temperature-taking.

The Breastfeeding Basics course will assist mothers in making an informed decision about whether or not to breastfeed. The class is also designed to help prepare a woman for nursing her baby. Other topics include the benefits of breastfeeding, how to get started, dietary guidelines and how to manage breastfeeding while working outside the home. The class is taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.
