Labor Support Services

Having a specially trained doula at your baby's birth gives you an extra measure of emotional, informational and physical support just when you and your partner need it. Studies have shown the effects of professional labor support are phenomenal, beginning with reduced need for induction and pain medications, epidurals, C-Sections, and episiotomies. Furthermore, the presence of a doula brings a more positive birth experience, more successful breastfeeding and enhanced mother/child bonding.

  • Length of labor reduced by 25%
  • Oxytocin (Pitocin) use reduced by 40%
  • Use of narcotics reduced by 30%
  • Forceps reduced by 30%
  • Epidurals reduced by 60%
  • 50% less chance of C-section

The PMC Doula Team provides a wide range of services, including continuous labor support, prenatal support, including some childbirth education and assistance in writing your ‘Birth Preferences,' initial breastfeeding support immediately following the birth, and one postpartum visit. Phone and email support is provided as well.

It is important to note that a doula does not replace the partner and/or other loved ones who are involved in the process. Rather, the doula provides the level of support a family desires and offers suggestions for the birth partner as needed. The doula can be the primary support person and sees herself as part of a team.
