Midwife and patientOur Philosophy
Pregnancy and childbirth are normal events which, in most cases, occur with little intervention. Our practice is unique because we support and nurture you and use minimal intervention during normal childbirth. We continuously monitor you for deviations from normal and intervene when necessary. Education ,emotional support, and continuity of care are essential elements in achieving a safe and satisfying childbirth experience. We provide information and expert advice that allow you to make informed decisions about your care. We support and nurture you and encourage your participation.

Our Clients
Our clients are healthy women from adolescence thru menopause. Not only will we care for you during pregnancy can have an appointment for gyn care, annual exams, family planning, and preconception counseling.

Prenatal Care with the Nurse Midwives
Throughout your pregnancy you will have appointments with each of the nurse midwives. At the first appointment, the process of prenatal care and birth will be discussed. All of your questions will be addressed. The follow up visits will consist of monitoring the growth of your baby, checking the baby’s heart beat, and assessing your pregnancy for possible complications. This will also include some routine lab work. At each visit there will be adequate time to answer your questions and provide education about your pregnancy and childbirth. We feel that it is important to develop both a professional and personal relationship with you.

The Birth
We attend births at St Luke's Episcopal Hospital and at The Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center. When it is time for the birth, the on call nurse midwife will be with you in the hospital to provide support during your labor. Whether it is a medication free birth that you desire or a medicated birth, the nurse midwife will guide and coach you and your family while monitoring the health of you and your baby. We encourage you to be active during labor which helps the birth to progress naturally. Activities in labor may include, walking, sitting on the birthing ball, bathing, and the use of different positions. We enjoy the participation of family and significant others during labor and birth. When the baby arrives, they are given to you immediately for skin on skin contact. After the birth, we will help you with breastfeeding within the first hour.

Collaboration with our Physicians
The Women's Specialists of Houston consists of seven ob/gyn doctors and four nurse midwives. The nurse midwives and doctors work together to provide the best care for our clients. Together we develop a care plans for normal and complicated pregnancies. If ncessary, we will consult or comanage your care with one of our physicians. In some cases a woman may need to transfer to a physicians care. The nurse midwives assist the physicians in gyn surgeries and cesarean sections.
