Capture Baby on Camera
Tips to Get Great Photos

So you now have a wonderful baby to go along with that wonderful camera! Be sure to make the most of your photos by following these tips.

Snuggle in

Don’t be afraid to move in close to your baby when trying to capture that perfect shot. Sometimes being close makes all the difference in the outcome of that oh-so-cute moment. One important tip here is if you are moving in really close to capture the details in those tiny fingers and toes be sure to put your camera on the “macro” setting; the camera setting usually shows a flower graphic. This allows your camera to focus while being so close to your little bundle.

Think high

Lay down on the floor, move overhead, and capture a variety of angles. For infants sometimes this means stepping up on a step stool if you want a full body shot. For toddlers and children you can have them laying on the ground or even peering into the camera as you lay on the ground to capture them.

Think about background

Is that a trashcan? Take a moment to not only look at your child, but glance around to see if there is something distracting or unpleasant in the background. Sometimes it helps to have an “assistant” which can move the object. If you are shooting solo then just change your angle to try and eliminate whatever it is.

Talking helps

While taking photos, interact with your baby and children. We all love those real moments and expressions. Talk to them, let them react to what you are saying and engage them. Infants love hearing familiar songs and when photographing older babies or toddlers telling a story can be enough to light up their eyes.

Don’t give up!

Quantity is quality! Hoping to capture that one great shot? If so, take many, many photos. Chances are, taking only one picture will leave you wishing you had taken more. It often takes a dozen or more shots to get your “keeper”. Sometimes babies might not last as long as you hope they will. If things aren’t going in your favor try taking a break, maybe try giving your baby a snack, and try again later.

Get technical

An important part of effectively capturing the beautiful memories of your baby growing up is learning to use your camera! Every camera model is different, so first things first; read your manual. If you need hands-on learning, a class could be helpful. You can also typically find helpful videos online.
