Pre- & Post-natal Massages
Experiencing Comfort During and After Pregnancy
Prenatal massages are a holistic way to improve overall health and decrease stress for expecting mothers. Studies have shown that, when integrated properly, pre- and postnatal massages provide a vital piece to a woman’s wellness plan as a whole, both during and after pregnancy.
How is Prenatal Massage Different from a Normal Massage?
Prenatal massages are specifically designed to benefit moms-to-be. Unlike a traditional massage, clients are placed on their side to avoid putting extra strain on the lower back and pelvic regions. During prenatal massage, a special body support cushion is used to ensure proper positioning and maximum comfort for both the mother and baby. In addition, special attention is given to areas that are most affected during pregnancy. Trained therapists do, however, consciously avoid sensitive pressure points in a consistent effort to promote the health of the client and her baby while still using a gentle to medium touch.
Help During Pregnancy…
Talk to Your Doctor
It is highly encouraged that expecting mothers consult with their doctor before receiving a massage. Though women with normal, low risk pregnancies are generally able to incorporate prenatal massages into their wellness plan at any point, it is important that massage regiments are properly aligned with the care received from a physician or midwife. Typically, licensed massage therapists will require women to speak with their doctor before receiving a massage, placing emphasis on the importance of a consistent wellness plan for moms-to-be.
Start Early
It is a good idea to begin incorporating prenatal massage into your regular routine as early as possible. With a normal, low risk pregnancy you can start receiving the benefits of prenatal massage care as early as your first trimester.
Creating a Balance and Reducing Pain
Rising in popularity among expectant mothers, prenatal massages can help alleviate muscle tension, joint pain, and smooth hormonal changes as women progress through the stages of pregnancy. In alleviating these extra burdens, women find more comfort throughout the course of their pregnancy. Massage also helps create homeostasis, or balance, within the body that has been shown to help improve sleep, lower blood pressure, alleviate morning sickness, and ease labor pain.
Staying Mobile and Hydrated
Prenatal experts advise expecting mothers not to become idle. Rather, pregnant women are encouraged to maintain an active lifestyle and stay well hydrated. Mother and baby require more water each day as the pregnancy progresses, hydrating with water and adding a lemon or lime wedge for a refreshing twist. Regulating water intake increases tissue pliability, which allows massage therapists to better manipulate the muscles and address any problems or discomfort the client may be experiencing during her pregnancy.
The Importance of Homecare
While it is crucial to stay mobile, moms-to-be should also remember to not over do it. Though prenatal massages greatly help reduce stress and pain during pregnancy, it is important that women take care of themselves in between appointments. In between visits to massage therapists, it is advised that women keep their feet elevated to help relieve edema, swelling due to excess fluid, and strain. Because feet may be difficult to reach, prenatal experts suggest that women try placing tennis balls on the floor and, with slight pressure, roll along the bottom of each foot daily.
Don’t Stop Prenatal Massage During Your Third Trimester
During a normal, low risk pregnancy, a prenatal wellness plan can be implemented as early as the first trimester and experts recommend that women do not stop receiving prenatal massage treatments during their third trimester. With a trained massage therapist, there is not an increased risk during the final trimester, and the benefits can be great. Continuing with the massages will help increase circulation and flexibility, which can ease labor pain and improve the birthing process as a whole. Therefore, it is advised that women receive regular massages at least once a month during their final trimester.
Postnatal Care…
Transitioning and Reducing Postpartum Depression
Not only have massages been proven to ease the course of pregnancy, they are also proven to benefit women in the stages following pregnancy. Studies show that prenatal and postnatal massage help reduce postpartum depression. Massage therapy can help make the transition from pre- to postnatal more relaxing both mentally and physically. It is important to continue to care for your body even after the pregnancy is over as women’s bodies take time to adjust to daily activity after giving birth.
