Children’s National Medical Center, the nation’s children’s hospital, can transform life long before the first breath is ever taken. Here, a fetus can become a patient. The Division of Fetal and Transitional Medicine offers a unique brain-oriented approach to the care of the complex and high-risk fetus and newborn. With the increasing survival of critically ill infants, we are continually aware of the risks to future quality of life posed by the risk of brain injury during the complex phases of fetal and neonatal care. In this regard we provide consultation to pregnancy caretakers for optimal brain-oriented care during pregnancy, delivery, and beyond.

Some of the nation’s preeminent authorities onfetal imaging work with referring providers to detect defects and devise treatments. After the baby is born, he or she is cared for by elite teams of neonatal and pediatric specialists who employ the newest proven technology and techniques in a Neonatal ICU classified level IIIC, the highest possible level of care.

As part of our responsibility to the high-risk fetus during the potentially hazardous transition to extra-uterine life, we have a task force of specialists who partner with referring physicians to develop the best possible anticipatory care plan for delivery and immediate resuscitation of the infant with a complex delivery. We also provide a specialized deployment team to be on-site to assist in these highly complex cases.
